4.0 Magnitude Earthquake Jolts Delhi, Strong Tremors Rattle North India

New Delhi, February 17: Residents of Delhi and nearby regions woke up to strong tremors early this morning as a 4.0-magnitude earthquake struck the national capital at 5:36 AM. The sudden jolt sent shockwaves across North India, triggering panic among people.

According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake’s epicenter was recorded in New Delhi, with a depth of just 5 km, making the tremors significantly strong.

Epicenter Near Dhaula Kuan, Loud Sound Reported

Officials confirmed that the epicenter was located near Durgabai Deshmukh College of Special Education in Dhaula Kuan. The area, which has a nearby lake, has experienced mild earthquakes in the past, including a 3.3-magnitude quake in 2015.

Eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud sound along with the tremors, further intensifying the panic.

PM Modi Urges Calm Amid Earthquake Tremors

Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to social media, urging people to remain calm and follow safety precautions.

“Tremors were felt in Delhi and nearby areas. Urging everyone to stay calm and follow safety precautions, staying alert for possible aftershocks. Authorities are keeping a close watch on the situation.”

“Everything Was Shaking”: Residents Recall Shocking Moments

The quake was strong enough to cause concern among residents, with many rushing out of their homes in fear.

  • A vendor at New Delhi Railway Station described the moment as “everything was shaking,” causing panic among customers.
  • A passenger at the station compared the tremors to an underground train moving beneath them.
  • A Ghaziabad resident shared, “The tremors were so intense; I had never felt anything like this before. The entire building was shaking.”

Delhi’s Earthquake Risk: Why the Capital is Vulnerable

Delhi lies in the seismic zone IV, making it one of the most earthquake-prone areas in India. This region has experienced frequent tremors, including:

  • A 7.2-magnitude earthquake in China’s Xinjiang on January 23, which sent strong tremors across Delhi-NCR.
  • A 6.1-magnitude earthquake in Afghanistan on January 11, which also shook parts of Delhi.

No Casualties Reported So Far

Authorities have confirmed that no injuries or casualties have been reported. However, officials are closely monitoring the situation for any aftershocks.
