BENGALURU: The cost of onions, a staple in many kitchens, has surged in Bengaluru’s markets, increasing from Rs 50 per kg just a week ago to between Rs 60 and Rs 70 per kg.
This rise is linked to a decrease in supply caused by heavy rainfall in certain regions of Karnataka, which has significantly affected onion production. While North Karnataka used to be a supplier, the recent downpours have resulted in spoilage.
Currently, onions are being sourced from Pune in Maharashtra. Traders anticipate that prices may continue to climb as Dasara approaches. Additionally, garlic prices have already exceeded Rs 400 per kg. The public is increasingly burdened by rising costs of essential goods, and now they face the added strain of soaring onion prices.
