The Isha Foundation, led by Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev, has approached the Supreme Court to challenge a recent Madras High Court directive. The High Court had asked the Tamil Nadu government to submit a report on all criminal cases filed against the foundation. Representing the foundation, Senior Advocate Mukul Rohatgi requested an urgent hearing before the Supreme Court, with the Centre supporting the plea.
Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud, expressed the likelihood of staying the High Court order, noting that it was issued without any apparent reason. The Supreme Court bench also plans to privately interact with two women, who were reportedly brainwashed and detained by the Isha Foundation, before delivering an interim ruling.
The case stems from a habeas corpus petition filed by a retired professor. He claimed that his two highly educated daughters, aged 42 and 39, were being coerced into living permanently at the Isha Yoga Centre in Coimbatore. He further alleged that the women were being administered food and medicine that impaired their cognitive functions.
