Gangtok : In a shocking medical oversight, doctors at STNM Hospital successfully removed a pair of surgical scissors from a woman’s abdomen—12 years after they were mistakenly left inside during an appendix surgery at the same hospital.
The discovery came after the woman continued experiencing abdominal pain for years, prompting her family to bring her back to the hospital. An X-ray revealed the startling presence of the surgical scissors, which had remained lodged in her abdomen since the original procedure.
Investigation Launched into Medical Negligence
Dr. Suresh Madan Rai, spokesperson for STNM Hospital, confirmed that a committee comprising health officials and hospital doctors has been formed to investigate how the scissors were left behind during the 12-year-old appendix operation.
On Thursday, the medical team performed surgery to successfully remove the scissors, providing relief to the patient at last.
This incident raises serious questions about medical protocols and patient care, prompting the hospital to look into procedural failures to prevent similar mishaps in the future.
