Government Issues Stern Warning to Social Media Platforms

New Delhi: The central government has cautioned social media platforms against the unchecked spread of fake bomb threats, highlighting the significant risks they pose to public safety and economic stability. In an advisory issued on Friday, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology directed platforms to swiftly remove such false information, warning that failure to act could compromise their legal immunity under the Information Technology Act.

The advisory emphasized that hoax bomb threats have disrupted airline operations, inconvenienced passengers, and stretched security agencies, adding unnecessary strain on public order. The government noted that the ability to quickly share and re-post misinformation on social media amplifies the impact of such threats, creating widespread panic and economic disturbances.

“These fake threats affect a large number of citizens, disrupt airline operations, and jeopardize economic security,” the advisory said, underscoring the importance of curbing misinformation. It reiterated that social media platforms must meet their due diligence obligations or risk losing their status as intermediaries protected under the IT Act.

The government’s firm stance comes amid growing concerns over the misuse of digital platforms to spread misinformation. Authorities are urging social media companies to act decisively to prevent future disruptions and protect the security of air travelers.
