New York, NY — Peanut, a black squirrel who captured the hearts of over half a million Instagram followers, was euthanized by New York state authorities, sparking public outcry and sorrow among fans. The decision followed an investigation by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) after the squirrel reportedly bit a government worker.

With 537,000 followers on Instagram, Peanut charmed fans worldwide by dressing up in miniature outfits and enjoying treats like waffles. He was first rescued by New Yorker Mark Longo, who found Peanut as an orphaned baby squirrel after his mother was tragically hit by a car. Despite Longo’s attempt to return him to the wild, Peanut stayed, becoming his companion for seven years and a social media star under the handle @peanut_the_squirrel12.

“Internet, you WON. You took one of the most amazing animals away from me because of your selfishness,” Longo posted on Instagram, addressing those he believed had reported Peanut’s living situation to authorities. Heartbroken, he described Peanut as his “best friend” and expressed “shock, disbelief, and disgust” at the outcome.

The DEC, along with Chemung County health officials, stated that Peanut and a raccoon, also residing with Longo, were illegally kept and posed a public health risk. On October 30, authorities seized the animals, noting that their cohabitation with humans could expose people to rabies. To test for rabies, both animals were euthanized. A DEC representative added that anyone potentially exposed should consult a medical professional.

Longo now plans to advocate for changes in wildlife policy and is encouraging supporters to contribute to his legal fund and plans for an animal sanctuary.
