Shimla Emerges as Post-Diwali Retreat for Tourists Seeking Fresh Air

SHIMLA (Himachal Pradesh): As post-Diwali pollution levels rise across North India, Shimla’s clean and fresh air is drawing tourists looking for a healthy respite. Thanks to successful environmental efforts, Himachal Pradesh’s capital is witnessing an Air Quality Index (AQI) comfortably below 50, with other tourist hotspots in the state also enjoying safe air quality levels. This pollution-free atmosphere comes as a breath of fresh air for visitors from Delhi, Chandigarh, and other neighboring cities battling dense smog.

Environmental experts attribute Shimla’s impressive air quality to the growing awareness of “Green Diwali” practices and the gradual shift toward eco-friendly firecrackers. Dr. Suresh Kumar Atri, an environmental expert from the Himachal Pradesh Environment Department, highlighted extensive monitoring efforts across the state, which include nine stations dedicated to tracking noise and air pollution levels.

“We’ve observed about a 30% to 40% reduction in pollution levels this year compared to previous Diwali seasons. Our continuous monitoring of pollutants like CPM 2.5 and 10.5, along with the deployment of SOCS and NOCS equipment, has enabled us to better track and control pollution,” Dr. Atri explained.

Popular destinations like Dharamshala, Manali, Kullu, and Sunder Nagar are also reporting excellent air quality. However, industrial zones like Baddi and Paonta Sahib continue to face challenges with higher pollution levels.

Visitors are already experiencing the benefits of Himachal’s cleaner environment. Swati, a tourist from Delhi, shared, “The air quality here is excellent, unlike the smog-filled atmosphere back home. The greenery and cleanliness are refreshing; I hope this purity can be preserved for future generations.”

Similarly, Sanjeev Bhootni from Chandigarh remarked, “Breathing in Shimla’s fresh air feels rejuvenating. Compared to our crowded cities, Shimla truly feels like a haven.”

As North India grapples with post-Diwali pollution, Shimla’s pristine air quality and scenic beauty offer a sanctuary for those seeking relief and a wholesome environment.
