Haveri, November 5, 2024: To mark the centennial anniversary of the historic 1924 Belagavi Congress session, the Karnataka government is organizing a joint Assembly session. The special session aims to honor Mahatma Gandhi, who chaired the original event, calling for India’s freedom from colonial rule. In an unexpected move, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has extended an invitation to former US President Barack Obama, known for his admiration of Gandhi’s teachings, to join the commemorative event.
Karnataka Minister HK Patil announced the plans, emphasizing Gandhi’s global legacy as a leader not only for India but for the world. “The 1924 session led by Gandhi became a crucial moment in India’s struggle for independence. As we mark its 100th year, we aim to reflect on Gandhi’s vision, which continues to inspire people worldwide,” Patil shared.
The joint session will be held at the Suvarna Vidhana Soudha in Belagavi, with the date yet to be confirmed based on Obama’s availability. Minister Patil highlighted Obama’s recognition of Gandhi’s universal influence, noting that an appearance by the former US President would reinforce the event’s significance.
In addition to the Assembly session, Karnataka has planned a statewide tribute, involving memorials and programs at over 40 locations significant to Gandhi’s journey across Karnataka. The celebrations will culminate in a convergence of “Rath Yatra Jyothis” from various districts in Belagavi on December 26-27.
The 1924 Belagavi Congress, the 39th meeting of the All India Congress Committee (AICC), remains a pivotal chapter in India’s freedom movement. As part of the centennial celebrations, Karnataka aims to preserve Gandhi’s legacy through enduring memorials and promote his teachings of peace and unity.
