Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh State Women’s Commission has proposed that men should not be allowed to tailor women’s clothing or cut their hair as a measure to protect women from potential misconduct. In a meeting held on October 28, the commission suggested that only female tailors should take measurements for women’s clothing, and that salons should only allow female barbers to attend to female customers.
Himani Agarwal, a member of the women’s commission, explained that the proposals were introduced by the commission’s chairperson, Babita Chauhan, and were unanimously supported by other members present. “We believe that due to the involvement of men in these professions, there is a higher chance of women facing unwanted behavior,” Agarwal said. “This proposal aims to address those concerns and prevent incidents of ‘bad touch’ and other misconduct.”
In addition to restricting certain services to female professionals, the proposal includes installing CCTV cameras in tailoring shops and salons to ensure better security and monitoring. Agarwal clarified that the suggestion does not imply that all men have ill intentions, but the commission believes the changes could create a safer environment for women.
The commission’s proposal is currently in the preliminary stages and will be presented to the state government with a request for legislative support. The initiative reflects a broader push to address issues of harassment and safeguard the dignity of women in professional settings.
