New Delhi: Actress Rupali Ganguly has filed a defamation claim for Rs 50 crore against her stepdaughter, Esha Verma, accusing her of making baseless allegations that have severely damaged her personal and professional reputation. In an exclusive interview, Ganguly’s lawyer, Sana Raees Khan, explained the reason behind this significant compensation demand.
According to Khan, the Rs 50 crore claim is proportionate to the harm caused by the unfounded allegations against Ganguly. “This amount represents the serious harm inflicted on Ms. Rupali Ganguly’s dignity and career due to the defamatory statements. It reflects both the emotional toll and the professional setbacks she has endured. Such a demand sends a message that unsubstantiated claims have serious consequences,” Khan stated. She added that the notice underscores the importance of accountability in protecting one’s reputation.
The legal action was prompted by a series of public comments made by Esha Verma, where she accused both Rupali and her father, Ashwin Verma, of past misconduct. Esha alleged that Rupali physically assaulted her mother and accused Ashwin of abuse, claims that Khan categorically denies on behalf of her client.
Khan further revealed that Esha’s response to the legal notice has been to delete her Twitter account and remove the defamatory posts. “Esha’s removal of these posts underscores the gravity of spreading misinformation and highlights the importance of responsible communication,” said Khan. The removal is seen as a step toward justice, affirming that malicious accusations are intolerable in today’s public sphere.
The legal notice also cites mental trauma and professional setbacks suffered by Ganguly as a result of the defamatory remarks. Reports indicate that Ganguly, who initially remained silent, felt compelled to act legally after Esha’s allegations negatively affected her family, including her 11-year-old son, Rudransh.
