UK singer and television personality Tulisa has openly shared that she identifies as “demisexual.” The revelation came during a heartfelt discussion on her personal life in a recent episode of I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!
The 36-year-old, known for her role as a former X Factor judge, is one of ten stars competing in the Australian jungle series. During a casual chat about dating with her fellow contestants, Tulisa shared her journey of celibacy and her understanding of her identity.
“I feel like I’m demisexual,” Tulisa said, explaining that she only experiences sexual attraction after forming a deep emotional connection. “I need actual depth. I’m a slow, slow burner.” She further emphasized how dating without emotional intimacy feels unsettling, saying, “It makes me feel physically sick to imagine sleeping with someone I don’t have a connection with. This is my temple, you cannot enter!”
Tulisa also revealed she has been celibate for over three years and has steered clear of dating apps. Despite societal pressures, she added, “I actually do enjoy being single. I enjoy being on my own.”
What Is Demisexuality?
Demisexuality is a sexual orientation where individuals experience sexual attraction only after developing a strong emotional bond with someone. It falls under the asexuality spectrum and was first defined in 2006 on a forum dedicated to asexuality.
Though exact numbers are unclear, a 2021 British census revealed that 0.06% of people in the UK identify as asexual, a category which includes demisexuality.
Tulisa’s candid admission has sparked conversations about demisexuality, contributing to greater awareness and understanding of diverse sexual orientations.
