The much-anticipated IPL 2025 mega auction is still months away, but excitement is already brewing following a mock auction conducted by Star Sports and JioCinema. The exercise, involving cricket experts, simulated the potential outcomes of the real auction and revealed some staggering figures for marquee players.

Pant Creates History

Rishabh Pant, released by Delhi Capitals ahead of the auction, emerged as the top buy, with Punjab Kings (PBKS) acquiring him for a record-breaking INR 33 crore. Represented by former England captain Eoin Morgan, PBKS used their massive auction purse of INR 110.5 crore to secure Pant’s services.

Morgan described the acquisition as a long-term investment:
“Pant is not just a player; he’s a leader and a game-changer, akin to a young MS Dhoni. His ability to captain, bat explosively, and serve for years to come makes him an invaluable asset.”

KL Rahul’s Big Payday

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), represented by former head coach Mike Hesson, splurged INR 29.5 crore to secure KL Rahul. Hesson highlighted Rahul’s experience and local appeal, positioning him as a pivotal player in RCB’s post-Virat Kohli era:
“Rahul brings stability, experience, and the ability to anchor the innings. He fills the critical wicket-keeping void left by DK’s departure while offering immense value as a local talent.”

KKR Retains Leadership with Iyer

Reigning champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) spent INR 21 crore to re-sign captain Shreyas Iyer, represented by Sanjay Bangar.
“Leadership continuity is priceless in T20 cricket,” said Bangar. He added that Iyer’s market worth justified exceeding the budget, emphasizing his proven winning capabilities and strong rapport with KKR’s management and staff.

Other Notable Buys:

  • Mitchell Starc: INR 18 crore – Mumbai Indians
  • Arshdeep Singh: INR 16.5 crore – Punjab Kings
  • Ishan Kishan: INR 15.5 crore – Delhi Capitals
  • Yuzvendra Chahal: INR 15 crore – Sunrisers Hyderabad

Inflated Prices or Market Reality?

Former cricketer Aakash Chopra, representing Delhi Capitals, admitted the prices might be inflated but defended the strategy, stating:
“The numbers here reflect the evolving dynamics of the IPL. These players fit the teams’ strategies perfectly, and their contributions will justify the price tags.”

As fans eagerly await the real IPL 2025 mega auction, the mock event has set the stage for thrilling bidding wars, bold strategies, and game-changing signings.
