Former Karnataka CM SM Krishna, Visionary Behind Bengaluru’s IT Revolution, Passes Away at 92

Bengaluru: Former Karnataka Chief Minister and statesman SM Krishna, who was instrumental in establishing Bengaluru as an international technology hub, passed away in the early hours of the morning at his residence in Bengaluru. He was 92. Sources indicate that the veteran leader had been unwell for some time and breathed his last around 2:45 am.

Born on May 1, 1932, in Somanahalli, Mandya district, SM Krishna’s illustrious political career spanned over six decades. Initially elected as an Independent candidate in 1962, Krishna’s career trajectory took him through significant roles, including his time as a member of the Congress Party and later the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Widely regarded as a visionary, Krishna is celebrated for his contribution to the development of Karnataka’s IT-BT sector during his tenure as Chief Minister from 1999 to 2004. His policies and proactive approach are credited with bringing global tech giants to Bengaluru, transforming the city into the “Silicon Valley of India.”

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah expressed his deep sorrow, describing Krishna’s contributions as unparalleled. “Karnataka will always remember him for his role in the IT-BT revolution and his guidance to leaders like me during my early days in Congress,” Siddaramaiah said.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu also shared his grief, recalling Krishna’s unwavering dedication to public welfare. “Despite our competition in attracting investments, he remained a close friend and a true leader,” Naidu remarked.

An academic achiever, SM Krishna was a Fulbright Scholar and held law degrees from prestigious institutions, including the Government Law College in Bengaluru and the George Washington University in the USA. He began his political journey with the Praja Socialist Party and later joined the Congress in 1971, eventually serving as Chief Minister, Maharashtra Governor, and India’s External Affairs Minister.

Krishna’s legacy as a leader who transformed Karnataka’s economic and technological landscape remains etched in history. His passing marks the end of an era, leaving an indelible impact on the state and the nation.
