Three people have died and 15 others have been injured following a stabbing incident at a suburban supermarket in Shanghai, China’s largest city.
The attack occurred on Monday in the city’s southwest, adding to a troubling trend of knife assaults in major Chinese cities this year. The 37-year-old suspect, who goes by the surname Lin, was apprehended shortly after the incident by local police, according to a statement from the Songjiang police branch.
Initial investigations indicated that Lin had traveled to Shanghai to express his frustration stemming from a personal financial conflict. This incident happened as China was gearing up for the upcoming “Golden Week” holiday, aligned with National Day on October 1. Public knife attacks have been increasing in China over the years, with officials often attributing them to mental health issues.
Recently, a 10-year-old Japanese boy was fatally stabbed in Shenzhen, and earlier this year, a man killed eight people in Xiaogan, Hubei province. In 2022, a man wounded 15 individuals in a Shanghai hospital and was subsequently sentenced to death.
