New Delhi: With the Bihar Assembly elections set for later this year, the Union Budget 2025 delivered a major boost to the state, where the BJP-JDU alliance currently holds power. The budget, presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, includes new infrastructure, agricultural benefits, and education sector upgrades—moves widely seen as pre-poll incentives.
Key Announcements for Bihar
1. Makhana Board for Farmers
The government will set up a Makhana Board in Bihar.
The board will help Makhana farmers access central schemes and improve market opportunities.
This move benefits North Bihar, where Makhana farming is a major livelihood source.
2. Greenfield Airports
New airports will be developed in Bihar as part of India’s civil aviation expansion.
These will enhance connectivity and boost regional economic growth.
3. Mithilanchal Canal Project
A new canal project in the Mithilanchal region has been approved.
It aims to improve irrigation and support agricultural development.
4. Expansion of IIT Patna
Indian Institute of Technology, Patna, will see a capacity expansion to accommodate more students.
BJP-JDU Alliance & Electoral Implications
These budget allocations come at a crucial political moment. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s JDU, which secured 12 seats in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, has emerged as a kingmaker after the BJP fell short of a majority. With the JDU’s support crucial to the NDA government, the big-ticket budget gifts are seen as a strategic move to strengthen ties ahead of state elections.
Congress Questions Andhra Pradesh Snub
The Opposition, however, was quick to react. Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh criticized the selective generosity, questioning why Andhra Pradesh—another key NDA ally—was overlooked.
“Bihar appears to have received a bonanza of announcements. It is natural since elections are due there later this year. But why has Andhra Pradesh been cruelly ignored?” Ramesh asked.
With Bihar elections approaching, the NDA’s political calculations seem clear, but the response from Andhra Pradesh’s leadership remains to be seen.
