Delhi The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has submitted a comprehensive chargesheet in the high-profile rape and murder case of a second-year postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The chargesheet meticulously outlines the sequence of events, nature of injuries, cause of death, and the evidence that led to the arrest of the accused, Sanjoy Roy.

On Tuesday, the CBI presented the chargesheet to a special court in Sealdah, formally charging Sanjoy Roy, a former contractual staff member with the Kolkata Police, with the rape and murder of the female doctor who was on duty at the time of the incident. According to CBI sources, the chargesheet includes statements from approximately 200 witnesses.

The investigation, largely aligned with the initial findings of the Kolkata Police, relied heavily on digital and physical evidence to establish Sanjoy Roy’s presence at the crime scene on August 9. CCTV footage played a crucial role, showing Roy at the trauma center entrance at 3:34 AM and later exiting the ward at 4:32 AM, initially seen wearing a Bluetooth neckband earphone which was subsequently seized as evidence.

Additional evidence detailed in the chargesheet includes the victim’s mobile phone and laptop, Roy’s mobile device, blood samples, and forensic analysis of various physical items such as clothing and personal effects. Forensic experts conducted thorough examinations, finding the victim’s blood on Roy’s pants and slippers, as well as his saliva on a nipple swab taken during the autopsy. Hair samples belonging to Roy were also recovered from the crime scene.

The chargesheet attributes the victim’s death to asphyxia caused by manual strangulation and smothering, with injuries indicating forceful sexual assault. Signs of resistance on the victim and injuries on the accused suggest a violent struggle.

Following the submission of the chargesheet, a Kolkata court has taken cognizance of the case and ordered that the trial of Sanjoy Roy be conducted in-camera, ensuring that proceedings remain confidential. The trial is scheduled to commence on November 4 with the framing of charges. In his first court appearance on Tuesday, Roy stated, “If I don’t speak, all the blame will be put on me.”

This case underscores the ongoing efforts of the CBI to address and resolve serious criminal allegations through meticulous investigation and adherence to legal protocols. As the trial approaches, stakeholders anticipate a thorough judicial process to deliver justice for the victim and her family.
