India Celebrates Constitution Day 2024: November 26, observed as Constitution Day or Samvidhan Diwas, marks the historic adoption of the Indian Constitution by the Constituent Assembly in 1949. While the Constitution officially came into effect on January 26, 1950, transforming India into a republic, the adoption on November 26 remains a pivotal milestone in the nation’s journey toward democracy.
Declared in 2015 to commemorate the 125th birth anniversary of Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar, the principal architect of the Constitution, this day highlights the monumental efforts behind drafting the document that has upheld India’s democratic framework for over seven decades. Prior to this, November 26 was celebrated as Law Day.
Why November 26?
November 26, 1949, was the day the Constituent Assembly approved the final draft of the Constitution, culminating nearly three years of intense deliberation. The Assembly had been established in 1946, entrusting the task of drafting the Constitution to a committee chaired by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. After two years, eleven months, and seventeen days of discussions, the world’s longest written Constitution was adopted, symbolizing unity in diversity for a newly independent India.
Historical Significance
The Preamble of the Indian Constitution declares India a sovereign, socialist, secular, and democratic republic and aims to secure justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity for all its citizens. The choice of January 26, 1950, as the enactment date was intentional, aligning with the anniversary of the Poorna Swaraj Declaration of 1930, signifying complete independence from colonial rule.
75th Anniversary Celebrations
This year marks the 75th anniversary of the Indian Constitution, with celebrations nationwide. Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his wishes, stating, “Happy Constitution Day to all countrymen on the auspicious occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Indian Constitution.”
The day serves as a reminder of the vision and dedication of the Constituent Assembly in laying the foundation for a democratic India. It also emphasizes the enduring relevance of the Constitution in safeguarding the unity, integrity, and diversity of the nation.
