New Delhi – Prime Minister Narendra Modi voiced strong disapproval on Monday regarding a recent attack on a Hindu temple in Brampton, Ontario, Canada. Addressing the incident, he denounced the “cowardly attempts to intimidate Indian diplomats” and called on Canada to uphold justice and protect Indian citizens and places of worship.
The attack, which occurred while the Indian High Commission hosted a consular camp, saw individuals forcefully breaching the temple’s gates. The event has sparked concerns over the safety of Indian citizens in Canada and escalated diplomatic tensions between the two nations. The Indian government, represented by spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, has expressed deep concerns, highlighting a need for Canadian authorities to bring the perpetrators to justice.
In a statement, PM Modi emphasized, “Such acts of violence will never weaken India’s resolve. We expect the Canadian government to ensure justice and uphold the rule of law.” Modi’s comments were echoed by the External Affairs Ministry, which condemned the attack and urged the Canadian government to ensure that all worship sites are adequately safeguarded. Jaiswal further stated, “We also expect that those indulging in such violence will be prosecuted.”
The incident prompted criticism from Canadian officials as well, with Indo-Canadian MP Chandra Arya asserting that a “red line” had been crossed. Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown joined in, urging the fullest extent of the law against those responsible. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also condemned the violence, although diplomatic ties between the two nations have strained further due to Trudeau’s previous allegations regarding the involvement of Indian agents in the killing of Khalistani activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, who India has labeled a terrorist.
The incident also follows a period of diplomatic strain marked by mutual expulsion of diplomats and Canada’s recent designation of India as a cyberthreat. Ottawa claims state-sponsored cyber actors from Delhi are potentially conducting espionage, allegations India firmly denies. The complex and escalating tension between the two nations remains a concern for Indo-Canadians who seek peace and security within their communities.
