Defence Minister Rajnath Singh conducted Shastra Puja at Sukhana Cantonment in Darjeeling to mark Vijayadashami, celebrating the festival alongside Army personnel. Images surfaced showing the minister applying tilak on the soldiers.
In his address to the troops, Singh conveyed his warm wishes, saying, “I wish all of you and your families a very happy Vijaya Dashmi. It brings me joy to perform the Shastra Puja in your company. India is among the few nations where we honor our tools and treat them with respect. While it may seem trivial, it signifies our deep reverence and cultural practice of honoring instruments before their use.
“As you may know, professionals across the nation pay homage to their tools once a year. On Diwali and Vasant Panchami, students honor their books and pens, while musicians bless their instruments. Many families are connected to farming traditions. Shastra Puja symbolizes not just reverence for our tools but our respect for our work.”
Singh further remarked, “You have upheld this tradition for many years. Today marks a victory, commemorating when Ram defeated Ravan—a triumph for humanity as well. I see the qualities of Lord Ram reflected in our soldiers. Historically, our country has only engaged in attacks when our culture was insulted, never out of hatred. I wish everyone a joyous Vijayadashmi.”
