On Wednesday, October 9, 2024, the Delhi High Court called for the Delhi Police’s response regarding a petition that seeks permission for climate activist Sonam Wangchuk and others to conduct a peaceful protest at Jantar Mantar in the city.
A panel of Justices Prathiba M. Singh and Amit Sharma issued a notice on the petition filed by the Apex Body Leh, requesting replies from both the police and the Delhi government by the next hearing date on October 22. Tushar Mehta, the Solicitor General of India representing the Delhi Police, argued that there was no urgency in the case. The petition claimed that the police had not provided a valid reason for denying the protest request.
Wangchuk and his colleagues from Ladakh, who were reportedly detained at a Delhi border entry point by local police on September 30, traveled to the national capital to advocate for Ladakh’s inclusion under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. They were released afterward.
The Sixth Schedule addresses the governance of tribal areas in Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, and Mizoram, designating them as “autonomous districts and autonomous regions.”
