BENGALURU: In response to Prime Minister Modi’s critique of Congress-led welfare programs, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar defended the state’s welfare initiatives, describing them as a model now being replicated across the country. Shivakumar asserted that Congress’s approach focuses on tangible improvements for people rather than political rivalry.
“Our guarantees are now the national model. Even BJP states are adopting our welfare schemes,” said Shivakumar, referencing PM Modi’s recent comments labeling Congress’s promises as “fake.” Emphasizing the benefits of Congress’s schemes, he said, “Our programs aim to support people’s development and ensure their well-being.”
Backing Shivakumar, senior Congress leader KC Venugopal criticized PM Modi’s record on delivering promises, calling him the “champion of empty promises.” Venugopal pointed out that while Congress initiatives in Karnataka, like the Anna Bhagya Scheme and Shakti scheme, have provided real support to millions, BJP’s commitments have often been undelivered. He also highlighted Congress-led Telangana’s efforts in alleviating farmer debt and food security measures, questioning BJP’s fulfillment of key promises such as “Ache Din” and “Amrit Kaal.”
Addressing PM Modi’s claims that Congress-ruled states face worsening economic conditions, Venugopal countered that Congress’s welfare model is time-tested and prioritizes consistent aid. He questioned the outcomes of central BJP-led projects, such as housing for all and 100 smart cities, suggesting these have yet to materialize fully.
Prime Minister Modi had recently expressed concern over Congress’s approach, urging the public to be cautious of “empty promises” and citing recent election results as a sign of public skepticism toward Congress’s policies.
