A tragic incident unfolded at a nursing home in southeast Delhi’s Kalindi Kunj area, where Dr. Javed Akhtar, a Unani practitioner (BUMS), was shot dead by two minors who disguised themselves as patients. The shooting occurred around 1:45 am when the two boys, believed to be about 16 years old, entered the hospital seeking treatment for one of them, who had a bandaged toe. After receiving treatment, the pair entered Dr. Akhtar’s cabin and shortly after, a gunshot was heard.
Night staff members Gajala Parveen and Mohammad Kamil rushed to the scene, where they found Akhtar seated in a pool of blood, fatally wounded from a shot to the head. CCTV footage from the hospital is being examined to piece together the events leading up to the killing.
According to police, the attack appears to have been premeditated, with the boys having visited the hospital the previous day. Staff confirmed that Dr. Akhtar had been on duty since 8 pm the previous night. This incident has raised further concerns about the safety of medical professionals, especially in light of ongoing protests in Kolkata following the recent rape and murder of a woman doctor at RG Kar hospital. Doctors in Kolkata are pressing for better security measures, including 24/7 security personnel and enhanced CCTV systems in hospitals, after renewed threats and attacks against medical staff.
