New Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and former Delhi Health Minister, Satyendar Jain, has been granted bail in a money laundering case after over two years in custody. A local court approved his bail, citing the prolonged delay in the trial process and his extended incarceration.
Jain was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) based on a 2017 FIR filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) alleging money laundering through companies linked to him. In May 2023, the Supreme Court had granted him interim bail on medical grounds, though a subsequent plea for regular bail was denied in March, leading to his return to Tihar Jail.
Judge’s Reasoning:
Special judge Vishal Gogne emphasized that the trial has yet to commence, and with no signs of an early conclusion, the delay in proceedings warranted the granting of bail. “Considering the delay in trial and long incarceration of 18 months, and the fact that the trial will take a long time to start, let alone conclude, the accused is favourably suited for the relief,” the judge stated.
AAP Leaders Celebrate Release:
Jain’s bail follows a trend of key AAP leaders being released in recent months. Former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his former deputy Manish Sisodia were also granted bail in separate money laundering cases linked to the controversial Delhi liquor policy. The AAP has repeatedly accused the central government of misusing investigative agencies for political gain, allegations the Centre has denied.
Reacting to the news, Manish Sisodia posted on X, “Satyamev Jayate. Long live the Constitution… Satyendar Jain was kept in jail for such a long time by making false and baseless allegations. His house was raided four times. Nothing was found, yet he was kept in jail… Thanks to the judiciary for supporting truth and justice.”
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal also welcomed Jain’s release, writing, “Welcome back, Satyendar.”
Background of the Case:
The money laundering investigation against Satyendar Jain is rooted in allegations that he used companies under his control for illicit financial transactions. His arrest was part of a broader crackdown by central agencies on high-profile AAP leaders, which the party claims is politically motivated.
With elections around the corner, Jain’s release is likely to rejuvenate the AAP’s political narrative, giving the party fresh momentum to challenge the ruling government.
