Ganga Water Contamination: NGT Flags High Faecal Bacteria Levels at Prayagraj

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has expressed serious concerns over alarming levels of faecal bacteria in the Ganga River at Prayagraj, as revealed in a recent report by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).

The report, submitted on February 3, highlights a sharp rise in faecal coliform bacteria during the Maha Kumbh Mela, raising red flags about water quality and public health risks.

Key Findings of the CPCB Report

1. Water quality monitoring on January 12-13 found that the river failed to meet the bathing criteria in terms of Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD).

2/ The river did not conform to primary water quality standards for bathing due to excessive faecal coliform (FC) levels across all monitored locations.

The findings indicate a serious threat to the sanctity and safety of the Ganga, especially during large religious gatherings, prompting urgent intervention from environmental authorities.
