New Delhi has achieved another milestone in its defense manufacturing push with the successful flight-test of the advanced Pinaka guided rocket system. Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the Pinaka system demonstrated its enhanced range, accuracy, and capability for multiple target engagement in salvo mode.
The Defence Ministry reported that the tests, conducted across three phases, evaluated 12 rockets fired from upgraded launchers by different production agencies. “These trials are part of the Provisional Staff Qualitative Requirements (PSQR) validation,” the ministry said, highlighting India’s progress in defense manufacturing under the ‘Make in India’ initiative.
What is the Pinaka Rocket System?
Named after Lord Shiva’s bow, the Pinaka system was first deployed during the Kargil War, replacing the Russian Grad BM-21 launcher in the Indian Army. Developed by the Armament Research & Development Establishment (ARDE) under the DRDO, it can fire 12 rockets in just 44 seconds, covering a target area of 700 x 500 meters.
The upgraded Pinaka Mk-II, with a range of 60 km, can operate in various modes, including manual, autonomous, and remote. Its advanced “shoot-and-scoot” capability allows it to evade enemy counterattacks. Additionally, the guided version, with precision seekers, now reaches ranges far beyond the initial model. DRDO is also developing Pinaka variants capable of 120, 150, and 200 km ranges.
Global Interest: France and Armenia
Pinaka has garnered international interest, with France and Armenia considering its purchase. Armenia, affected by ongoing conflict, was the first to place an order, and France is now in advanced discussions to test the system. France’s interest aligns with its strong defense relationship with India, as seen in the recent Rafale and AC 295 transport aircraft deals.
Deployed along both the Line of Control with Pakistan and the Line of Actual Control with China, the Pinaka system has become a significant tool in India’s defense strategy. With the potential to counter long-range threats from neighboring nations, it continues to advance India’s standing in global defense exports.
