New Delhi: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar reaffirmed the strength of India-US relations while describing former US President Donald Trump as an “American nationalist”. Speaking at an interactive session at Hansraj College, Delhi University, Jaishankar acknowledged the evolving nature of diplomacy and India’s approach to global affairs.
India’s Approach to Changing Global Dynamics
Responding to a query on whether Trump is a friend or foe to India, Jaishankar said, “I recently attended his (Trump’s) oath-taking ceremony, and we were treated well. I believe he is an American nationalist.” He emphasized that while Trump’s policies could introduce new challenges, India’s foreign policy would remain firmly rooted in national interest.
“Yes, he (Trump) will bring changes—some might seem out of syllabus. But in diplomacy, we must adapt to such situations in the interest of the country,” he remarked. He added that while India and the US may have differences on certain issues, there are also many areas of cooperation.
Modi-Trump Relationship & India’s Global Influence
Jaishankar underscored the strong personal rapport between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Trump, saying, “Our relationship with the US is robust, and Modi shares a good personal equation with Trump.” He also noted India’s rising global stature, adding that perceptions about the country have transformed significantly in recent years.
“Even non-Indians now claim to be Indian because they believe it helps them, even in getting a seat on a plane,” he quipped, illustrating India’s increasing global recognition.
Jaishankar’s Journey into Politics
Reflecting on his transition from diplomacy to politics, Jaishankar candidly admitted that he never envisioned becoming a bureaucrat or a politician. “My entry into politics was accidental, or call it destiny—or call it Modi. He pursued me in a way that nobody could refuse,” he said.
Highlighting India’s role in supporting its diaspora, he remarked, “Wherever Indians go, they always turn to us. We are their protectors abroad.”
