Karnataka Cabinet Approves ₹5,000 Crore Water Resilience Project

Bengaluru: The Karnataka Cabinet has approved the Karnataka Water Security and Disaster Resilience Programme (KWSRDP), a ₹5,000 crore project aimed at enhancing water security and disaster resilience in the state. The project is supported by the World Bank, which will provide a ₹3,500 crore loan for its implementation.

The project will proceed following the approval of the Department of Economic Affairs, Government of India, and the finalization of a loan agreement with the World Bank.

Key Cabinet Decisions

The Department of Revenue (Disaster Management) has been authorized to implement the KWSRDP.

The Department of Finance will negotiate loan terms and currency details with the World Bank, subject to approval from the Department of Economic Affairs.

The Cabinet also approved the Public Private Partnership (PPP) Policy-2025, which aims to encourage private sector participation in infrastructure development.

The government has decided to withdraw the Karnataka Urban and Rural Planning (Amendment) Bill, 2024, which pertains to premium Floor Area Ratio (FAR).

Reason for Bill Withdrawal

The decision to withdraw the Urban and Rural Planning (Amendment) Bill, 2024, follows Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot’s request for clarifications on legal aspects of the bill.

“Since the Governor has sought clarifications involving legal aspects, it is appropriate to consult relevant stakeholders and conduct a comprehensive review,” a Cabinet note stated.

The KWSRDP is expected to strengthen water management and disaster preparedness in Karnataka, addressing critical climate and water-related challenges.
