A recent survey by LocalCircles has revealed a grim reality for residents of Delhi-NCR: every single family in the region is dealing with at least one member suffering from pollution-related health ailments. With air quality hitting alarming levels, the study highlights the severe impact of toxic air on public health.
Widespread Health Issues
According to the survey, 75% of families reported members experiencing sore throat or cough, while 58% reported headaches caused by the deteriorating air quality. Breathing difficulties and asthma were noted by 50% of the families surveyed.
The survey was conducted across over 21,000 residents in Delhi, Gurugram, Noida, Faridabad, and Ghaziabad, with 63% of the respondents being men and 37% women.
Coping Mechanisms Amid “Gas Chamber”-Like Conditions
Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) crossed 400 in recent weeks, with PM2.5 levels reaching 1,500 in some areas. To combat the toxic environment:
- 27% of families have turned to air purifiers.
- 23% of families reported taking no protective measures, citing a lack of affordable options.
- Others are relying on immunity-boosting foods and drinks to mitigate the effects of pollution.
The use of air purifiers has risen significantly, from 18% of families on October 19 to 27% by mid-November, reflecting how those with financial means are investing in solutions.
Health Crisis Escalates
The survey also noted a worrying trend: the percentage of families with at least one sick member rose from 69% on November 1 to 75% by November 19.
LocalCircles compared the worsening situation to “living in a gas chamber,” highlighting the urgent need for systemic measures to address air pollution.
