New Delhi: In a significant diplomatic shift, Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed his nation’s commitment to India, emphasizing that Maldives will not compromise India’s security interests. Describing India as a “valued partner and friend,” President Muizzu highlighted the importance of cooperation across multiple sectors, including defense, during his inaugural bilateral visit to India’s capital.
Contrary to previous perceptions of him as a “pro-China” leader who campaigned on an “India Out” platform, President Muizzu conveyed that Maldives’ relationship with India is founded on mutual respect and shared objectives. He acknowledged India as one of Maldives’ foremost trade and development partners, underscoring the depth of their bilateral ties.
During his address to a prominent Maldivian English daily, President Muizzu emphasized the necessity of diversifying international relationships to foster growth and development. While advocating for the “Maldives First” policy, he assured that expanding collaborations with various countries would not detract from India’s interests. “Respect for our neighbors and friends is embedded in our DNA,” he stated, urging Indian tourists to return to the Maldives. “Indians make a positive contribution… Indian tourists are welcome,” he added, highlighting the critical role of tourism in the Maldivian economy, which suffered setbacks last year due to diplomatic tensions.
Scheduled to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi later today, President Muizzu’s remarks signal a warming of relations following a prolonged diplomatic impasse last year. The standoff arose after comments from three Maldivian ministers about Prime Minister Modi and a social media post suggesting Lakshadweep as an alternative tourist destination. In response, the Maldives Foreign Ministry distanced itself from the ministers’ remarks, leading to their suspension and the resignation of two officials, Mariyam Shiuna and Malsha Shareef, last month.
Furthermore, President Muizzu addressed the controversial removal of 90 Indian military personnel from three aviation platforms previously gifted by India. He explained that this decision fulfilled the will of the Maldivian people, yet he reiterated that India remains a crucial partner in maintaining regional stability. “This historic relationship is intertwined like the roots of a tree… built on centuries of exchange and shared values. The relationship between the Maldives and India has always been strong,” he affirmed.
President Muizzu’s visit and statements reflect a concerted effort to mend and strengthen ties with India, ensuring continued collaboration and mutual support in the face of regional challenges. By extending a special invitation to Indian tourists, the Maldives aims to revive its vital tourism sector and reinforce the enduring friendship between the two nations.
