Bengaluru — A tragic and gruesome incident has unfolded in Bengaluru as authorities investigate the murder and subsequent suicide of Mukti Ranjan Roy, a 29-year-old man accused of brutally killing his girlfriend, Mahalaxmi. Roy allegedly dismembered Mahalaxmi’s body before taking his own life, leaving behind a disturbing suicide note that sheds light on the motive behind the heinous act.

Mahalaxmi was last seen at her workplace at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Bengaluru on September 1. On the same day, her boyfriend and team head, Mukti Ranjan Roy, also disappeared. Weeks later, neighbors noticed a foul odor emanating from Mahalaxmi’s residence and alerted her relatives. When her mother arrived at the house on September 21, she discovered dismembered body parts concealed in the refrigerator and blood stains in the washroom.

Investigations revealed that Roy had severed Mahalaxmi’s body into over 50 pieces after strangling her between the night of September 2 and 3. Utilizing a sharp tool purchased the following morning, he meticulously chopped her body in the washroom and stored the fragments in the fridge. To cover his tracks, Roy used acid to clean the washroom before fleeing to Bhadrak, Odisha, accompanied by his younger brother. However, authorities were unable to locate him in time, leading to his suicide.

A chilling suicide note found near Roy’s body provides insight into his actions. In the note, Roy confessed to killing Mahalaxmi in what he described as an act of self-defense, claiming that Mahalaxmi had intentions to harm him and had even acquired a black suitcase to dispose of his remains. “If I had not killed her, Mahalaxmi would have killed me and dumped my body,” the note stated.

Roy also alleged that Mahalaxmi exerted significant pressure on him to marry her, resorting to physical abuse when her demands were unmet. “Mahalaxmi’s demands were continuously increasing, even though I had given her a gold chain and ₹7 lakh. She also beats me up,” the note read. These revelations paint a picture of a tumultuous and abusive relationship that ultimately culminated in tragedy.

Further investigations uncovered that Mahalaxmi, originally from Tripura, was already married and had a child but lived separately from her husband. The police have confirmed that they will soon file a chargesheet in the case, now that they have obtained translations of Roy’s suicide note and his postmortem report from the Odisha Police. “We will soon file the Chargesheet as we have now got the translation of his suicide note and his postmortem report from the Odisha Police,” stated B. Dyananad, Commissioner of Bengaluru Police.

Despite extensive searches, the weapon Roy used to dismember Mahalaxmi remains untraced. However, a witness at Vyalikaval market in Bengaluru identified Roy when shown his photograph, aiding the authorities in piecing together the events leading up to the tragedy.

This harrowing case underscores the critical need for addressing domestic abuse and the importance of mental health support to prevent such devastating outcomes.
