Kolkata: A tragic incident unfolded in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district, where a minor girl was allegedly kidnapped and murdered after leaving home for a coaching class. The discovery of her body has ignited anger among local residents, leading to protests and the vandalism and arson of a police camp.
According to police reports, the girl departed for her coaching class in Mahishamari on Friday but did not return home. Her family filed a missing person complaint that night. Around 3:30 am on Saturday, her body was found in a field, bearing multiple injuries. While the post-mortem report is still pending, the police have arrested a 19-year-old man, Mostakin Sardar, in connection with the kidnapping and murder.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage in the community. Enraged residents took to the streets, setting a police camp on fire after vandalizing it. Protesters, some armed with sticks and brooms, continue to demonstrate, prompting a significant police presence to prevent further escalation.
The girl’s father recounted that she had informed him she would return home after class. When she failed to do so, the family approached a nearby police outpost and were directed to the closest police station. Officials stated that an investigation was initiated promptly after the complaint was received.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has alleged that the girl was raped before being murdered, although official confirmation awaits the post-mortem results. Union Minister and BJP State President Sukanta Majumdar accused the state government of negligence and demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The BJP’s claims come amid existing criticism of the Trinamool Congress-led government over its handling of previous cases, including the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in August.
The West Bengal government and Chief Minister Banerjee have faced increasing scrutiny over law and order issues, particularly concerning crimes against women. As tensions rise, authorities are urging calm while the investigation continues.
