New Delhi:As of today, new FASTag regulations have been enforced to improve toll payment processing and prevent misuse, according to the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). Here’s a breakdown of the changes and what they mean for FASTag users.
What is FASTag?
FASTag is an electronic toll collection system that allows vehicles to pass through toll plazas without stopping for cash payments. It uses RFID technology to scan the tag on the vehicle’s windshield and deduct the toll charges automatically from a linked payment account.
Key Changes to FASTag Rules
Blacklisted FASTags – No Transactions Allowed
If a FASTag is blacklisted, placed on a hotlist, or marked with low balance for more than 60 minutes before reaching the toll booth, the system will decline the transaction.
FASTags blacklisted for 10 minutes after scanning will also face transaction rejection.
In such cases, users will face double toll charges as a penalty (error code 176).
Grace Period for Recharging
Users now have a 70-minute window before reaching the toll to rectify their FASTag status.
If the FASTag is recharged within 10 minutes of scanning, users can request a penalty refund and pay the standard toll fee instead of double charges.
Delayed Transactions – Additional Charges
If the toll transaction is processed more than 15 minutes after passing the toll reader, users may face extra charges.
Chargebacks – Cooling Period Introduced
Banks can raise chargeback requests for incorrect deductions due to blacklisted or low-balance FASTags only after a 15-day cooling period.

No Last-Minute Recharges: FASTags blacklisted for more than 60 minutes before arriving at a toll booth will not be accepted, even if recharged at the last moment.
