Delhi – Revered folk singer Sharda Sinha, famed for her contributions to Maithili, Bhojpuri, and Hindi music, passed away at AIIMS Delhi following complications from cancer. She was 72. Admitted to the hospital’s oncology department on October 25, Sinha had been battling multiple myeloma, a bone marrow cancer, since 2017. Her condition worsened due to septicemia, and she ultimately succumbed to refractory shock.
Known for her soulful Chhath songs and Bollywood classics, Sinha’s passing marks a profound loss for India’s musical landscape. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had reportedly been monitoring her condition, while Union Health Minister JP Nadda visited AIIMS last night to ensure her care.
Sinha’s son shared an emotional tribute, saying, “Your prayers and love will always be with mother. She has been called by Chhathi Maiya to her side.”
A celebrated artist from Bihar, Sharda Sinha was a national treasure, often performing traditional music for the Chhath festival, and her songs remain an enduring part of Indian cultural celebrations. Bollywood fans may recognize her voice from popular films like Maine Pyar Kiya and Hum Aapke Hain Kaun, and her electrifying track “Taar Bijli” from Gangs of Wasseypur.
Sinha was honored with numerous awards, including the Padma Bhushan, Padma Shri, and the Sangeet Natak Akademi award. Her death follows the recent passing of her husband, Braj Kishore Sinha, who suffered a fatal brain hemorrhage. Together, they celebrated their 54th anniversary earlier this year.
The entire nation, especially her admirers in Bihar, mourns the loss of this musical legend, whose voice and legacy will continue to inspire generations.
