Moscow: Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for consistently raising concerns about the Ukraine conflict and promoting dialogue for a peaceful resolution. Speaking at a media briefing ahead of the upcoming BRICS Summit, Putin acknowledged Modi’s commitment to diplomacy and practical engagement with all stakeholders.
“Each time we talk, PM Modi raises this matter and offers his thoughts. We appreciate his efforts,” said Putin. India has maintained that the crisis should be resolved through dialogue, with PM Modi calling for peaceful negotiations on multiple occasions.
Russia Ready for Peaceful Resolution but Blames Ukraine for Stalled Talks
Addressing the conflict, Putin reiterated Russia’s willingness to end the war peacefully but blamed Ukraine for halting negotiations. “We were not the ones who stopped the talks—it was the Ukrainian side,” he remarked.
The conflict between Russia and Ukraine has persisted since February 2022, impacting global geopolitical dynamics. Modi’s efforts at fostering dialogue were highlighted during his participation in the India-Russia Bilateral Summit in July, and the Indian leader will visit Russia again from October 22-23 for the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan.
BRICS: A Non-Western, Not Anti-Western Bloc
Touching upon the nature of BRICS, Putin reiterated that the group is not anti-Western but rather focused on fostering new development hubs. “As Prime Minister Modi rightly said, BRICS is a non-Western group, not an anti-Western one,” Putin clarified.
He emphasized that BRICS nations—comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—play a vital role in global stability, representing 45% of the world’s population and 33% of its landmass. The bloc has experienced continuous growth in trade, reinforcing its significance in global commerce.
Economic Shifts: Rise of the Global South
Putin also highlighted the growing influence of Southeast Asia, Africa, and the Global South, forecasting rapid economic growth in these regions. “These emerging development centers will shape the future of global economic power,” he said.
Countries with steady growth are now approaching key milestones in their development, positioning them as new players in the global economy.
Putin’s Criticism of US Sanctions and Dollar Dominance
Putin took a swipe at the United States, accusing it of damaging bilateral ties through continuous sanctions. He suggested that the world is reconsidering the reliance on the US dollar. “Even traditional US allies have reduced their dollar reserves,” he noted, adding that the US would struggle to keep pace with China’s economic rise.
He praised Russia’s relationship with China, calling it a cornerstone of global strategic stability. “Our relations with China are built on mutual respect and shared interests,” Putin remarked, underscoring the importance of the two nations’ cooperation in international affairs.
