Ratan Tata, the chairman emeritus of Tata Sons, one of India’s largest conglomerates, is in critical condition in intensive care at a hospital in Mumbai, according to sources familiar with the situation who spoke on Wednesday. The 86-year-old business leader, who oversaw Tata Sons for over two decades and is credited with its expansion and diversification, mentioned on Monday that he was undergoing routine medical check-ups due to his age and related health issues.
A spokesperson for Tata, did not respond immediately to inquiries about his health on Wednesday. The sources, including one close to the Tata family, did not provide additional information regarding his illness.
Mr. Tata is currently receiving treatment at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai. In a statement shared on his social media on Monday, he expressed that he was in good spirits and downplayed any concerns about his health.
While he is no longer as involved in the daily operations of the conglomerate, he still advises Tata Sons’ leadership on major decisions, according to a senior executive. Additionally, he remains active with Tata Trusts, the philanthropic arm of the group, where he serves as chairman. He is also a member of the international advisory boards for Mitsubishi Corporation and JP Morgan Chase, as per his Tata Sons profile.
Having taken the helm of the conglomerate in 1991, Mr. Tata led the company established by his great-grandfather over a century ago until 2012. He founded Tata Teleservices in 1996 and led Tata Consultancy Services to its initial public offering in 2004.
