Chikkaballapur: Six people narrowly escaped tragedy on Monday night after two cars were swept into a drain by floodwaters near Nagarjuna College on the Bengaluru-Hyderabad highway in Chikkaballapur district. Heavy rains caused a nearby lake to overflow, submerging parts of the service road and creating dangerous currents.
The first car, carrying a family returning from a hospital, was dragged off the road by the surge of water. “The water flow suddenly increased, and our car was swept away,” said Muniraju, a resident of Huralagurki and owner of one of the vehicles. He credited a passing goods vehicle for helping them anchor the car with a rope, preventing it from drifting further downstream.
About 30 minutes later, another car with three youngsters met the same fate. The second vehicle was carried into the water, but the passengers managed to escape by opening the boot.
Earlier, a motorcyclist was also swept into the same drain by floodwaters but managed to survive. The back-to-back incidents highlight the risks of traveling during heavy rains in the region.
Chikkaballapur and surrounding areas have been experiencing continuous rain, leading to the overflow of lakes and waterlogging on roads, posing severe challenges to commuters.
