CHENNAI: In response to Tamil Nadu Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin’s promotion to Deputy Chief Minister, BJP leader Tamilisai Soundararajan criticized the move, claiming it signifies a shift from democracy to dynastic politics. She expressed concerns that this appointment could alienate senior party leaders.
“I question whether we are witnessing democracy or dynastic politics. What has happened to the senior ministers? Before Udhayanidhi even existed, many leaders were instrumental in building the party to celebrate its 75th anniversary. Yet, senior leaders have been sidelined. Minister Ponmudy has been demoted, and three others have been removed. Were there any corruption allegations involved? It seems you’re trying to absolve yourself of responsibility,” Soundararajan remarked.
She also raised questions about women’s empowerment and social justice, suggesting that a Dalit MLA should have been given the Deputy CM position. “What about women’s empowerment and social justice? The Deputy CM role could have gone to a Dalit MLA. Even Thirumavalavan seeks a share of power. Why is that being denied? One female minister has been reassigned, and no new female appointments have been made. Is Udhayanidhi the only one suited for this role?” she stated.
Additionally, she criticized the DMK for the quick reappointment of former transport minister Senthil Balaji to the cabinet following his bail in a money laundering case. “What’s the rush to reinstate Senthil Balaji as a minister? It shows a lack of concern for corruption, which is setting a troubling precedent in Tamil Nadu politics.
This will create issues among party members and senior ministers. It feels like democracy has been replaced with dynastic politics, undermining senior leaders,” she added.
Udhayanidhi Stalin, the son of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, has been appointed Deputy Chief Minister. He will continue his role as Minister for Youth Welfare and Sports Development while also assuming the Planning and Development portfolio. This change is part of a significant cabinet reshuffle that includes Senthil Balaji’s return to the cabinet. The Tamil Nadu Raj Bhavan announced, “The Chief Minister has recommended Udhayanidhi Stalin for the Planning and Development portfolio in addition to his current roles, designating him as Deputy Chief Minister, along with other new appointments to the Council of Ministers.”
