Chennai: A heartbreaking incident occurred at Chennai’s Marina Beach during the 92nd Indian Air Force (IAF) Day celebrations, resulting in the deaths of three spectators. According to medical professionals, at least one of the victims succumbed to heat stroke amidst the scorching weather.
Families and aviation enthusiasts had flocked to Marina Beach before 11 am to witness the highly anticipated airshow. Many attendees were seen using umbrellas to shield themselves from the intense sunlight. The event featured an impressive display by the Special Garud Force commandos, who performed a simulated rescue mission and a hostage-freeing operation, adding to the excitement of the day.
The airshow showcased a diverse array of 72 aircraft, including the advanced Rafale jets, the indigenously developed Light Combat Aircraft Tejas, the Light Combat Helicopter Prachand, and the historic Heritage aircraft Dakota. The event attracted an estimated 1.5 million people, marking it as one of the largest gatherings for an airshow in 2024.
This edition of the IAF airshow was particularly significant as it was the third time the event was held outside Delhi and the first in South India. Previously, the IAF organized airshows in Prayagraj in October 2023 and Chandigarh in 2022, highlighting the branch’s efforts to engage with audiences across different regions of the country.
Local authorities and event organizers have expressed their condolences to the families of the deceased and are reviewing safety measures to prevent such tragedies in the future. The incident underscores the importance of ensuring adequate hydration and shade for large crowds attending outdoor events, especially during extreme weather conditions.
