Union Budget 2025: Internet for Government Schools, Social Security for Gig Workers

New Delhi: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, in her eighth consecutive Union Budget, announced a series of education, healthcare, and labor welfare initiatives aimed at empowering students, healthcare access, and gig workers.

Key Announcements in Budget 2025

Broadband for Government Schools & Primary Health Centers

•           All government secondary schools and rural primary health centers will be connected to broadband internet to improve digital learning and healthcare access.

•           50,000 Atal Tinkering Labs will be set up in government schools to foster scientific temper and innovation among students.

•           The Bharatiya Bhasha Pustak Scheme will be launched to help students learn subjects in their regional languages.

Healthcare: Cancer Care & IIT Expansion

•           Daycare cancer centers will be established in all district hospitals over the next three years, with 200 centers opening in FY 2025-26.

•           IIT Expansion:

o          The number of students in 23 IITs has doubled in the last 10 years.

o          Five new IITs, set up after 2014, will receive additional infrastructure for 6,500 more students.

Social Security for Gig Workers & Street Vendors

 Gig Workers on Online Platforms

•           1 crore gig workers will receive:

 Identity cards and registration on the e-Shram portal

 Healthcare coverage under the PM Jan Arogya Yojana

Socio-Economic Upliftment of Urban Workers

•           A new scheme for urban workers aims to improve income, ensure sustainable livelihoods, and enhance quality of life for the urban poor and vulnerable groups.

PM SVANidhi Scheme Revamp

•           Street vendors will benefit from:

 Enhanced bank loans

 UPI-linked credit cards with a ₹30,000 limit

 Capacity-building support
