BELAGAVI: On Sunday night, a confrontation erupted between two groups in Solapur village of Belgavi District following an alleged act of desecrating the Durga Devi idol.
Tensions escalated as the Durga idol was brought for immersion, resulting in injuries to three individuals and damage to two motorcycles and a car. Police intervened with a lathi charge to control the crowd, restoring order. To prevent further disturbances, heavy police presence has been established, with officers conducting patrols in the area to maintain peace.
According to SP Belagavi, Bheema Shankar Guled, a dispute began between individuals named Amita Naika and Firoz. When groups gathered, police utilized lathi charges to disperse the crowd. Two KSRPs and additional police units have been dispatched to manage the situation. The incident occurred in the jurisdiction of the Sankeshwar police station, and the situation is currently under control.
A similar violent incident during Durga idol immersion was reported in Bahraich district, Uttar Pradesh, where protests followed a clash a day prior in the Mahasi area that became violent. Police detained 30 individuals connected to the Maharajganj incident and initiated a manhunt for the main offenders. Security has been bolstered in the region following vandalism of shops by protestors.
