SYDNEY: Cassius, the world’s largest crocodile in captivity, has died at his home in the Marineland Melanesia Crocodile Habitat, Australia. The massive saltwater crocodile, estimated to be over 110 years old, was 5.5 meters (18 feet) long and weighed nearly one ton. Cassius earned the title of “World’s Largest Crocodile in Captivity” from Guinness World Records in 2011, drawing visitors and crocodile enthusiasts worldwide.
In a heartfelt Facebook post, Marineland Melanesia described Cassius as “our beloved mate” and a “cherished member of our family.” Staff noted that Cassius’s health had been deteriorating since mid-October, likely due to his advanced age. “He was very old and believed to be living beyond the years of a wild croc,” the sanctuary shared.
Originally from the Northern Territory, Cassius was infamous for his aggressive behavior, known for preying on cattle and damaging boat propellers. He was brought to Marineland Melanesia in 1987, where he remained a prominent attraction and contributed to Australia’s unique wildlife tourism.
Cassius’s remarkable life has left a lasting legacy, making him a symbol of Australia’s diverse wildlife heritage and the endurance of nature’s oldest reptiles.
